What do I put into my website?

There’s a few different parts of a website and each business will vary in what exactly is applicable to them. But there are a few basic and common areas that every website should have.

put into my website

  1. Home page
    • This is the first page many visitors will arrive at, so make sure it’s very clear in the message it delivers, and that it’s customer-centric.
  2. Contact page
    • Make it easy for your customers to reach you. Be sure to include how, when and where.
  3. Blog page
    • This is where you will publish your high value content. An absolute must for every successful website that we’ll get into more detail on later.
  4. “What” page/section
    • This will be different for each business, but is basically where you tell (or show) your customers what you do. Your products and/or services. It doesn’t have to be setup as eCommerce (to sell online) but it should be attractive, compelling and answer customer questions. The goal is to make this section very customer-centric, you want it to be about THEM not you.
  5. About Us page
    • This tells customers who you are, why you’re in business, why they should care and why they should trust you. This is your company-centric messaging.

Always look at every page of your site through the eyes of your customer, never through your own eyes.

Your customers are no different. They want to know what’s in it for them. They want to know if you can solve their problem or satisfy their need/want. If they have to work to figure that out, you’ll lose them.

Another component of your website should be what’s called a “lead capture” system. Many businesses don’t feel that this is relevant to them or don’t even know what it is. But the truth is that it’s relevant to every single business in existence.

Basically capturing leads means that you’re getting some information from customers and prospects along with their permission for you to contact them. How this is utilized will look different for each business, but every business can benefit from having something in place for this.

[Tweet “To get started all you “have” to have is a Home Page.”]

That covers some of the basics. Just remember that to actually get started all you “have” to have is a Home Page. In some cases, most of the details from the other pages can be concisely summarized on the home page. It’s not ideal long term, but it is a place to start. Baby steps.
