TL;DR: perfect timing is a myth. Clarity comes from movement. Start small, learn as you go, keep going.
I hear this a lot from authors:
“I know I should set up my website, build an email list, or start posting online, but I don’t feel ready.”
Totally fair. It is tempting to wait for certainty, more time, or the perfect plan.
However, while waiting often feels safe, it quietly costs you momentum, visibility, and confidence. Publishing shifts daily. Reader behaviour changes. Platforms tweak what they show people. If you hold back until everything is certain, you’ll always be too late.
Uncertainty is not the enemy
Online growth is less about what you already know and more about how you handle what you do not. You won’t predict every response or result. And you don’t need to. You need a direction, a first step, and the willingness to adjust.
Think about your writing. You don’t wait for a flawless outline before drafting every sentence. You write, notice what works, revise, and find the book by writing it. Your platform works the same way.
Why “not yet” quietly costs more
- Missed learning: every week you delay is a week of data you don’t get.
- Lost compounding: small consistent actions stack, but only once you begin.
- Confidence erosion: the longer you wait, the heavier “starting” feels.
Name the hesitation
When an author hesitates to get started, it’s not because they’re lazy. There’s an underlying cause they haven’t identified. Let’s figure out what it is:
Is this a clarity, capacity, or courage problem?
Name which it is.
- Clarity: I don’t know what to do. → Define what you need to learn.
- Capacity: I can’t do it right now. → Shrink the scope or schedule it.
- Courage: I’m avoiding being seen. → Focus on a character, not yourself.
This isn’t about creating confidence or certainty out of thin air. It’s about figuring out what your block is and taking the next logical step that moves you forward.
Treat this like a tiny experiment
You don’t need a grand launch. You need one small action that teaches you something.
- Website: publish a simple homepage with a clear one-liner and a single CTA. (Not sure how to do this? Watch my Website Essentials Workshop.)
- Email list: set up a basic opt-in and a welcome note that tells readers what to expect. (MailerLite is the platform I recommend starting with.)
- Social: post one reader-friendly piece this week that invites a reply or save. (Don’t know what to post? Grab my Content Ideas Guide.)
Pro tip: pick a 20-minute task you can finish today. “Write my 60-word bio,” “Add an email signup form,” or “Share one fun snippet for my ideal reader.” Finish it, then choose the next one.
If you’ve been waiting on something, name it. Write it down. Take one step toward it today. Your future self will be very pleased you did.
